Women's Boxing Workout - Doing The Jab

There's so much more to boxing than first appears. If you watch boxing matches on TV you'll miss a lot unless you understand the techniques. It's an art much like dancing. You can work hard and perfect the sport and have a blast. It's mental concentration and it's an amazing workout.

Let's start with the most fundamental and important punch - the jab. It's a simple punch that doesn't require you to move any part if your body except your arm. It's a quick snap that's all about speed and it's designed to set you up for more aggressive punches. You can see me throwing a left jab in the picture! Here's how to do it..

Stand up straight with hands up in front of your face and elbows in. Put your left foot forward and pointing at the bag - put your right foot back and at about 90 degrees to the front with the heel lifted slightly. Make sure that your center of mass is between your feet - which is just a fancy way of saying don't lean forwards or backwards.

You can already see the concentration needed for the setup. Now don't move at all - except to snap you left arm out and back as fast as you can. Some experts put a slight twist on the punch for extra effect. Bam - the bag gets hit instantly, and you're back in position ready for your next punch. Remember, the reason you're back in position so fast is that nothing moved except your arm. Clever, right?
