Jumping rope is the iconic image of a boxer in training.
But even if you're not a boxer jumping rope is a superb workout.
Why did one of the greatest heavyweight champions of the world, who had the best jab I have ever seen, master the art of jumping rope? Because it builds stamina and raises cardiovascular endurance. It prepares the heart for the demands of the sport.
A round of boxing, punching and avoiding punches for 3 minutes, is incredibly exhausting both mentally and physically.
Try jumping rope for 3 minutes. Chances are you'll be seriously winded.
Jumping rope also improves the way you move. It helps build speed and fast foot work. The way a boxer moves their feet sets them up for a punch that will get their opponent's attention.
When I first started boxing I was surprised to learn there are 10 different ways to jump rope. I will explain these in later posts, but it really got my attention and I had a great workout trying different jumping techniques!
So why do boxers jump rope? It improves stamina, coordination, rhythm, footwork and cardio endurance.
The bottom line is it's good for all of us, and as a bonus we can take a rope anywhere. Which means we can get an amazing workout anywhere. So now we have absolutely no excuse!
